Pedestal Sink or Vanity - Which is the Best?

Bathroom sinks are available in many styles, colours, and materials. However, it is still difficult to decide between a pedestal and a vanity sink. Although most homeowners are able to choose a sink style and colour, it can be difficult for some homeowners to decide between a pedestal sink or vanity. Although interior designers may say you can't go wrong choosing one, there are some things to consider before you decide which style is best for you. Although pedestal sinks and vanities are the same, there are some key differences that could make one better for your home.

Space

The design rule of thumb is that a larger area will feel more open and spacious if there's more floor space. A pedestal sink will make your bathroom feel larger and more open. The pedestal sink's open base can make even small spaces seem bigger. Pedestal sinks tend to be larger than vanities, particularly those with two sinks. They can make a great addition to any bathroom. However, not all bathrooms have enough space for them. You might need to replace an existing vanity with a pedestal basin - depending on what is underneath, it may be necessary to repair the floor.

Storage

Vanities offer more storage space than pedestal sinks. This is especially true if you have a long storage cupboard under the sinks. These cabinets can be extended to the width and length of the vanity and are great for storing cleaning supplies, toiletries and extra bath linens. You can use the extra space in your bathroom to compensate for the lack of storage below the sink. This includes open shelves with baskets, medicine cabinets and over-the-toilet shelves. A wall-mounted console sink or vanity can provide more storage space while also freeing up valuable floor space.

Maintenance

Because of their small size and simple design, pedestal sinks are easy to clean. Dust and grime can accumulate faster in vanities with more features like drawers and cabinets. A vanity countertop can also add time to your cleaning routine. Staining can be an issue depending on the material used for the vanity. Granite and marble, for example, must be sealed to avoid staining or water absorption. Pedestal sinks are more difficult to clean than vanities. However, they are usually easier to clean and require only mild soap and water.

Installation

Pedestal sinks are more difficult to install than vanity. Pedestal sinks do not have a cabinet to conceal plumbing lines, unsightly holes, or water supply lines. Therefore, it is important that all connections are hidden. To do this, the drain should be perfectly centred and the supply lines installed at the right height close to the faucet valves. This can be very difficult for those who are not experienced. It is recommended that plumbers install pedestal basins.
